An electric generator has a the stator comprises a central shaft and has at least one axially-offset coil at an axial end of the central shaft such that a major central portion of the central shaft is not surrounded by the coil. A rotor comprises a magnetising layer arranged co-axially around the first generating layer and radially aligned with the major central portion. The generator has at least one of the generating layers is in the form of a tubular assembly comprising a tubular body which is co-axial with the central shaft and at least one axially-offset coil at an axial end of the tubular body such that a major central portion of the tubular body is not

surrounded by the coil.
