A method comprising adding froth phase modifier to at least one of crushed ore, ground ore, and combinations thereof, wherein the froth phase modifier is a polymer containing carboxyl groups or groups when hydrolyzed become carboxyl groups, the polymer comprising a functional group selected from silane, ester, sulfate or sulfonate groups or acids thereof, phosphate or phosphonate groups or acids thereof, hydroxamate groups or acids thereof, a phosphinate group or an acid thereof, hydroxyl groups or groups that can hydrolyze to become hydroxyl groups, pyrrolidinium, ether, acrylate or an acid thereof, hydrophobic groups, and combinations thereof, with the provisos that (1) said polymer is not a polysaccharide; and(2) when said polymer contains a functional group selected from sulfate or sulfonate groups or acids thereof, phosphate or phosphonate groups or acids thereof, and acrylate or acids thereof, and when said carboxyl group or a group when hydrolyzed becomes a carboxyl group is an acrylamide, the acrylamide is present in amount less than 35 mole percent.
